In many role-playing games (RPGs), including Elden Ring, understanding Soft and Hard Stat Caps is important for optimized character development. In general, “soft cap” refers to a point beyond which stat investments give diminishing returns, while “hard cap” indicates a point where stat investments give no further benefits. The value of these caps can differ based on the stat, as well as the specific game.
To make the best decisions about leveling and assigning stat points, you’ll want to consider the role and build you’re aiming for. In Elden Ring, for instance, you might want to focus on the Strength stat if you’re planning on wielding heavy weapons, or Dexterity for faster, lighter ones. Magic users might focus on Intelligence or Faith depending on whether they utilize sorceries or incantations.
Additionally, Stamina is crucial as it affects your equip load, the amount of dodges and rolls, you can perform, the amount of hits you can guard against, and your stamina gauge.
For each of these, you’ll want to consider not only the current requirements of your chosen role but also how you envision your character developing. Having a balance between different stats can help ensure you’re prepared for a variety of situations while focusing on one or two key areas can make your character extremely effective in specific scenarios.
Keep in mind that Elden Ring, like other FromSoftware games, has a “respec” system that lets you reassign your stat points in case you make a mistake or want to try a new build.
In Elden Ring, Rennala is the boss that allows you to respec once you have defeated her. Rennala can be found at the boss arena at the end of Raya Lucaria Academy, in Liurnia of the Lakes. The site of grace to travel to in order to respec only appears after you’ve beaten her, and is called Raya Lucaria Grand Library.
So, even if you initially choose a non-optimal stat distribution, you can still adjust later as you gain a better understanding of the game’s mechanics and your personal play style.

Strength Soft Caps
As a stat that’s fundamental to those who prefer the heavy melee style of combat, Strength defines the robust and resilient warrior archetype. By focusing on Strength, players enable their characters to utilize robust, slow, yet devastatingly powerful weapons, typically taking advantage of their physical defense. Weapons that see improved performance from a high Strength stat often require two-handed usage due to their bulk. The Strength stat experiences diminishing returns or “soft caps” when it reaches the levels of 18, 55, and 80.
Strength hits three soft caps at levels 22, 55, and 80:
- First Soft Cap: Level 20
- Second Soft Cap: Level 55
- Third Soft Cap: Level 80
- Hard Cap: Level 99
Dexterity Soft Caps
For players who blend melee and magic or focus on rogue-like combat, particularly those wielding twin blades, Dexterity is a key stat, second only to Strength for dealing physical damage. While it doesn’t boost magical power, Dexterity enhances casting speed, mitigates the damage taken from falls, and increases stability when riding horseback. The soft caps for Dexterity in relation to weapon damage are set at 18, 55, and 80.
Dexterity follows the same pattern as Strength. It hits three soft caps at levels 22, 55, and 80:
- First Soft Cap: Level 20
- Second Soft Cap: Level 55
- Third Soft Cap: Level 80
- Hard Cap: Level 99
Intelligence – Attack Rating Soft Caps
Intelligence is pivotal for boosting both spell damage and magic resistance, allowing spells to hit harder while simultaneously providing a protective barrier against enemy magic attacks. Spending points in this stat also amplify Fire Defense. The soft caps for Intelligence regarding weapon damage are 20, 50, and 80. For Sorcery ratings, the soft caps occur at 60 and 80.
Intelligence hits three soft caps at levels 22, 50, and 80 in terms of Attack Rating:

Faith hits three soft caps at levels 22, 50, and 80 in terms of Attack Rating:
- First Soft Cap: Level 20
- Second Soft Cap: Level 55
- Third Soft Cap: Level 80
- Hard Cap: Level 99
Faith – Incantation Scaling Soft Caps
Faith hits two soft caps at levels 60 and 80 in terms of Incantation Scaling:

Arcane – Attack Rating Soft Caps
Arcane is a distinct stat that increases the chances of item drops and bolsters holy defense. Its soft caps for weapon damage are at 20, 50, and 80, while soft caps for incantation scaling are at 30 and 45.
Arcane hits three soft caps at levels 22, 50, and 80 in terms of Attack Rating:
